Cathay Pacific Boosts Christchurch Services Ahead of Summer Season

More Flights, More Connections

Cathay Pacific will increase its Christchurch to Hong Kong service to five flights a week during the peak summer months, adding more international travel options for South Islanders and strengthening the region's connections into Asia, Europe and beyond.

The seasonal service will operate three times a week between 1 November 2026 and 27 March 2027, increasing to five weekly flights from December through to February to meet seasonal demand.

A Vote of Confidence in the South Island

Christchurch Airport Chief Executive Justin Watson said the increased schedule reflects continued strength in the South Island market. Cathay Pacific has operated from Christchurch since 2017, and the expansion adds 13 additional return services and around 7,000 extra seats over the summer period.

"More flights mean more choice for travellers, stronger connections to key international markets, and greater opportunities for South Island exporters," Watson said.

Christchurch Airport General Manager Aeronautical Development Gordon Bevan said the additional services would benefit both travellers and the region's export sector. He noted that demand for international travel has continued to build, and Cathay Pacific's joint venture with Air New Zealand makes onward connections more accessible for South Island passengers.

Supporting South Island Exporters

Beyond passenger travel, the expanded schedule also increases available belly freight capacity, supporting South Island exporters moving time-sensitive goods such as cherries, live seafood, and premium chilled meat to international markets. The additional capacity is expected to help exporters deliver fresher products overseas, supporting the region's reputation for high-quality produce.

Cathay Pacific Regional General Manager, Southeast Asia & Oceania, Aldric Chau, said the airline was responding to sustained customer demand with the expanded Christchurch operation.

"Every additional service creates more opportunities for our customers to connect seamlessly through Hong Kong to destinations across Asia, Europe and beyond," Chau said.

Flight Schedule

The Christchurch-Hong Kong route will operate as follows (all times local and subject to change):

Christchurch (CHC) to Hong Kong (HKG): Departs 2:20pm, arrives 8:50pm. Monday, Thursday, Saturday (Nov 2026-Mar 2027); Friday, Sunday added (Dec 2026-Feb 2027).
Hong Kong (HKG) to Christchurch (CHC): Departs 8:40pm, arrives 12:50pm (+1 day). Wednesday, Friday, Sunday (Nov 2026-Mar 2027); Thursday, Saturday added (Dec 2026-Feb 2027).

The service operates three flights per week between 1 November 2026 and 27 March 2027, increasing to five flights per week from December 2026 to February 2027.

Strengthening the Region's Global Gateway

The expanded schedule adds to Christchurch Airport's international network, reinforcing its role as the South Island's primary gateway to global destinations.
