About Wayne

Wayne Munn is a Partner in PwC New Zealand's Deals and Corporate Finance practice, based in Christchurch. He advises boards, shareholders and management teams on mergers and acquisitions, growth strategy, valuations, capital allocation, strategic partnerships and long-term value creation across a broad range of New Zealand organisations.

Wayne has more than 25 years' experience in corporate finance, investment and governance. Prior to joining PwC, he spent six years in the United Kingdom with Reuters and later served as Chief Investment Officer of Ngāi Tahu Holdings, where he helped oversee a significant investment portfolio and supported strategic investment decision-making.

His experience spans privately owned businesses, co-operatives, professional services firms, member-based organisations and Māori enterprises, with expertise in growth, commercialisation, investment, digital transformation and organisational change.

Wayne currently serves as a Director of the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra and is a former Director of Coastguard Southern Region.

A proud Cantabrian, he is passionate about supporting Canterbury's economic and community success. Outside work, he enjoys spending time with his family and keeping fit.

Based on Business Canterbury's purpose, vision and current strategy, how do you see your skills and experience contributing?

My career has focused on helping organisations grow and create long-term value. As a Partner in PwC New Zealand's Deals and Corporate Finance practice, I advise boards and management teams on strategy, investment, business growth, M&A and long-term financial planning.

I work extensively with membership-based and purpose-led organisations, including co-operatives, professional services firms, medical and health organisations, engineering firms and industry associations. This has given me a strong understanding of balancing member value with commercial sustainability and strategic objectives.

I bring experience in governance, revenue growth, strategic partnerships and organisational transformation, helping organisations evaluate opportunities, navigate change and position for sustainable growth.

As a Christchurch-based adviser, I am passionate about Canterbury's business community and believe my commercial perspective, governance experience and network would enable me to make a practical contribution to Business Canterbury's future success.

Tell us about your relevant experience, expertise and the skills you would bring to the Board.

As a Partner in PwC New Zealand's Deals and Corporate Finance practice, I advise boards and management teams on long-term financial planning, growth strategy, M&A, capital allocation, commercialisation, strategic partnerships and investment decisions across a wide range of New Zealand organisations.

I have extensive experience working with membership-based and purpose-led organisations, including co-operatives, professional services firms, medical and health organisations, engineering firms and industry associations. This has provided a strong understanding of balancing member value with commercial sustainability and long-term strategic objectives.

I regularly support organisations with growth initiatives, digital transformation, AI, cyber security, data strategy and organisational change. While I am not a commercial lawyer, I work closely with legal advisers on governance, transactions and commercial matters.

My governance experience includes serving as a Director of the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra and Coastguard Southern Region, bringing additional perspectives from both community and member-focused organisations.

Why are you interested in joining Business Canterbury's Board?

I am passionate about Canterbury's business community and the role Business Canterbury plays in supporting the success of its members and the wider regional economy.

Through my role as a Partner at PwC, I work with a diverse range of organisations across sectors and stages of growth, giving me a broad perspective on the opportunities and challenges facing New Zealand businesses. I see the Board role as an opportunity to apply that experience at a governance level and contribute to an organisation that has a meaningful impact on the region's economic prosperity.

I am particularly attracted to Business Canterbury's focus on advocacy, capability building and supporting businesses to navigate change and seize growth opportunities. I believe I can add value through my experience in strategy, investment, M&A, growth and transformation, combined with my governance experience on the boards of the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra and Coastguard Southern Region.

Most importantly, I see this as an opportunity to give back to a region and business community that has contributed significantly to my own career and success.
