About David

David Goodman is a commercial Partner at Anderson Lloyd, with more than 35 years’ experience as a commercial lawyer in New Zealand and London. He advises businesses and organisations across a broad range of commercial matters, with particular expertise in corporate transactions, mergers and acquisitions, governance, risk assessment and stakeholder management.

David holds a Master’s in Commercial Law from the University of London and is recognised by Legal 500 Asia Pacific for his corporate and M&A expertise. He is a Barrister and Solicitor of the High Court of New Zealand, a member of the Institute of Directors and has also been recognised through the New Zealand Law Awards.

His governance experience includes serving as a current Board member of The Arts Centre Te Matatiki Toi Ora. He previously co-founded and chaired the East Lake Trust, which promoted the development of an international flatwater sporting facility in Christchurch’s Residential Red Zone, and served on the Anderson Lloyd Board from 2015 to 2019. He has also held directorships across a number of family-owned SMEs.

David brings strong commercial, financial and governance experience, together with an in-depth understanding of not-for-profit and member-based organisations.

Outside work, David is married to Bridget and they have four sons, Tom (29), Tim (27), James (25) and George (23).

Based on Business Canterbury's purpose, vision and current strategy, how do you see your skills and experience contributing?

As a board member I would be focussed on what members need and want from Business Canterbury and ensuring that is delivered cost effectively. I would have an eye to the future without losing sight of core services that members value.

My legal and business background will allow me to add while when assessing risk ,value and implementation of new services, products whether by organic growth of acquisition.

Tell us about your relevant experience, expertise and the skills you would bring to the Board.

I have worked as a commercial lawyer in Christchurch for 30 years and been a partner for over 25 years. As a commercial partner in a national law firm I have specific expertise in commercial law including commercialisation of intellectual property a, products and services . I have extensive M&A experience acting on up to 8 transactions in the last two years ranging in value from 20 million to 250 million.

I act for a number of member based not for profit organisations like the Business Canterbury and understand the challenges. During my 4 years on the Anderson Lloyd board the firm experienced consideration growth . The firm now has over 32 partners and 150 staff. In addition, to my legal roles , I have significant governance experience.

Why are you interested in joining Business Canterbury's Board?

I grew up in Christchurch and have worked in it for many years. During that time I have been a active member of Business Canterbury , providing advice to members and as a partner organisation through Anderson Lloyd. I was recently appointed to The Arts Centre as a trustee board member and have an interest in contributing to Christchurch and Canterbury's growth and development.
